When James Goodall Francis and James Johnston planted their vines in 1858 and 1864 respectively, they surely didn’t envisage their wineries being at the centre of a booming Sunbury wine region.
Yet here we are in 2024, with Francis’ and Johnston’s Goona Warra and Craiglee Shiraz and Chardonnays still receiving rave reviews, alongside a host of other celebrated wineries with exceptional vintages.
The closest wine region to Melbourne, Sunbury’s reputation stretches much further afield. Wine afficionados from far and wide descend on the region on the first Sunday of the month when Craiglee opens its acclaimed cellar door for tastings. Offering the chance to meet the husband and wife winemaking team, learn about the family-run business’ sustainable practices and tour the same bluestone winery that’s stood for over 150 years. There’s a reason it’s been high on the bucket list of every wine lover for 40 years.
Beyond Shiraz and Chardonnay, a wide variety of grapes thrive in Sunbury’s cool, dry climate. The region also produces elegant and fruit-driven Riesling, Semillon, Traminer, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and some Italian varieties, too.
Other wineries worth visiting after your Craiglee cellar door experience include Arundel Farm Estate, Witchmount Estate and Russo Estate and be sure to leave plenty of room in the boot for purchases. You’re set to be toasting the Sunbury wine region for many vintages to come.
