As a time-honoured Sunbury local, Brendan Doyle, president of the Sunbury Cricket Club, feels the area has set robust foundations to raise a family and he really enjoys living and working in the area.
“The one thing I saw with Sunbury was that the sporting organisations here are quite strong,” says Brendan.
“The Sunbury Cricket Club relies on the support of volunteers and it’s not just the parents of children in the organisation, but also people in the community who share a love for the sport and the club,” says Brendan.
Brendan met his wife here in Sunbury over 23 years ago and has since grown a family with two boys who are also heavily involved in sport.
“I made a promise to my son that when he was ready to play in the senior division, I’d come out of retirement,” says Brendan. “I was fortunate to be able to play with my boy and we made a century batting together, which is a memory I’ll never forget.”
The Sunbury Cricket Club has celebrated its 150-year anniversary and Brendan believes much of its longevity can be attributed to “generations of family… and not just fathers and sons, but wives and daughters.”
The Sunbury Cricket Club has a progressive mindset and is committed to develop the first female senior team in Sunbury. It also places great importance on growing the junior girls’ program too.
The club’s Facebook and website provide details for registration days, but visitors are encouraged to come along and watch the games too, in a more casual setting.
