While there isn’t an emu in sight, there are platypus and the occasional echidna.

Add to these, native birds and these wetlands is a nature lovers wonderland.

An area that was once dedicated to flocks of sheep has been returned to the wild, to look just as nature intended. Thanks to Friends of Emu Bottom Wetlands and the Hume City Council, these 32 hectares are now home to native fauna. It’s taken almost thirty years of ongoing care and commitment, from the local council and conservationists, but anyone who visits is bound to agree that their efforts have been worth it. The scenic tapestry represents one of the finest examples of bushland restoration in Greater Melbourne.

It’s not only wildlife that get to bask in this amazing space. Locals can often be seen sitting by the ponds, walking the paths, or even standing on a platform for a closer view as a platypus pops up in the water. It’s even known to attract horse riders.

The area also boasts large grassy stretches. These are perfect for all kinds of games, from chasey to kicking a ball, or just laying a picnic rug to sit and take in the surrounds. Some of the area is designated dog-friendly, welcoming games of fetch and other off-leash antics.

Going by so many wagging tails it’s a very popular place with pooches much to the delight of Sunbury’s pet owners. Of course, given that this is home to our native creatures as well, please keep an eye on dogs and clean up after.
