Think straw boater hats, wicker picnic baskets and swimming costumes so modest it’s a wonder they didn’t weigh their wearers down.

Back in the early 1900s, The Nook was home to the annual Sunbury Swimming Carnival. Locals would gather on the banks and watch swimmers of all ages race up and down the lake. There were three diving boards, a change room and even showers. Of course, as swimming is no longer allowed, these remnants have disappeared but the appeal of sitting on the banks has survived over time.

The outlook from the hill is really something to see. Taking in the lake and surrounding parkland, it has become a favourite place to plop yourself down and share a bite to eat. Or, if you prefer use the barbecue facilities and sit at one of the tables.

The Nook is popular all year round. The trees provide shade and there are sheltered areas as well. Walk the lawns or cycle. In addition to catering for bike riders, there are also wheelchair accessible paths. Throughout you’ll find park benches to catch your breath or to just to sit for a bit and enjoy the moment. If you work up a thirst, there is also a drinking fountain.

The Nook is open all year round. Located in Vaughan Street Sunbury, there is a car park on site.
